Jane Clem has been painting and drawing as long as she can remember, but took a 12 year break from her art-- save for a few birthday cards. It was Costa Rica’s natural beauty that inspired her to start painting again two and half years ago.
“Of all the paintings I have completed since 2018, only 4 or 5 were not a Costa Rican theme.” She said in an interview with HELPCA Costa Ballena.
Jane is also a locally commissioned artist. You might have seen Jane’s murals around Costa Rica at Pizza Time in Uvita or The Domi Plaza in Dominical. Jane’s painting "Sloth Free" is currently on canvas in Dobson Manor, a pet friendly, 5 star bed and breakfast hotel close to the airport in San José.
She talked to us about her pleasant experience being a locally commissioned artist in Costa Rica: “Harry at Fruits el Rio was an excellent client and critic. He told me exactly what he wanted as I worked on his two sided sign painting and because of that it looks fantastic.”
She paints and draws natural images and landscapes, animals, people, portraits, cars and lorries, buildings and cityscapes as well as more abstract art. She is also inspired by street art.
As for the sustainability of her art? She prints her canvasses locally with a craftsman in San Isidro. She likes supporting the local economy and knows her customers do as well. Though her acrylic paint is not “earthy,” she makes sure to responsibly clean her brushes and claims that art is “regenerative by nature.”
Jane is known as JaneClem Greeting Cards on HELPCA Costa Ballena. Be sure to check out her murals next time you are in Domi or Uvita and support local artisans by purchasing one of her beautiful greeting cards.
